Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
so is it a complete write off or just a percentage? i'm assuming just a percentage
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
This. im confused ?Rubber314chicken wrote:That is pretty cool. So what exactly qualifies you to be able to do that? I mean, couldn't anybody just say they are a musician?

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
the catch was though i had to jump through a couple of hoops to get that
the only real way i was able to get the exemption was because my degree is in music performance so my only real business option is to be a musician.
its only just a percentage, i wish it was full cause then i would be rolling in custom kits and from row tickets at concerts.

haha, i was just looking through an old Modern Drummer, it had a tid bit about Travis Barker's cover of Soulja Boy's song.... and the interviewer asked something along the lines of, "do you have any tips to drummers who like to emulate your style and the damage it may cause to their gear?" and his response was something like, "hahaha, just play and enjoy it."

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
it really only works because im self employed, so really i personally do not get a write off, my business does, and my business is me haha.
i had to claim that my personal profession is a serious musician that will be playing at concert halls in symphonies a well as on stages at rock concerts while i am advertising for myself and pretty much treating myself as if i were a business, i have to keep up pretty tight clean records of all my business transactions that involve music. it also helps that i teach private lessons.
if any of that makes sense.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
oh you teach lessons too, that's probably why you were able to get the write off
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
it totally makes sense, you make money from music, where the bulk of us here do not, it is simply a hobby.... thus, you have the tax benefits of being a professional musician.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
its a part of the reason why yes, because its thought that what ever i purchase can be used as educational material for both myself and my students. as well as useful to my playing, i dont try to over use it, that why im not much of an in pulse buyer when it comes to musical instruments i only take what i need, otherwise if i went crazy im sure the irs will come around and ask what i needed 3 24" k light rides for.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
haha, yeah, i know what you mean.
I'm familiar with writing things off, between my mom being a teacher and buying class room supplies out of her own pockets and writing that off, and my dad being a former business owner and working for him and being aware of the stuff he wrote off, i mean it was all legitimate to write off, it just made me more aware of it.

What are you taking? I took summer gym and it was the easiest thing ever. Just show up and hang out with your friends for 4 hours a day.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Yeah, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but I'm going for Math. I don't even care that I have to go, really, it's just the cost of it that I'm worried about.
