Listen to that ride cymbal! Oh Yea!
how are you counting because 200 for jazz is moderate. you are probably counting double time which means you top out at 400. but that would mean you have crazy fast hands so idk

but hes still flicking his wrist and using th rebound to produce the second hit. Albeit its not a full moeller, i would still say its moeller
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Its like a moeller with an extra stroke, he only uses his wrist to start the motion then its all fingers from there, its "the riley motion". Im with J, though its not really a moeller he controls it with his fingers not his wrist. Its a good technique anyways regardless of what it is.

oh... if its double time.... then about 115 is my max then. I'm NOT a fast drummer by any means.

My hands are quick and i can flow around my kit pretty quick but my feet are by no means fast, they are independant but not fast. My feet are fast enough for what i do but thats it. I really have been focusing recently on my "headroom" (John Riley fans will get it), i never want to feel like i am doing all i possibly can or that i have run out of options. So recently i have been trying to increase my headroom capacity.
I think my main drumming strength is creativity, and the more head room you have the more creative yo ucan be and the more you can push the limits of your drumming. Hence why i am trying to build up and increase my head room.
Well thats my speech over "lol".

random question, you don't have to answer if you don't want to...
but just out of curiosity, how many of you all go to church on a regular basis?

I used to go. But I don't anymore. I probably haven't been in three or four years.

i basically don't go to church, ever, i may go to see a play or something if one of my cousins is in the play, but yea... basically no church for me.
(there was a rant here, but i thought it better to delete it)

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
i think i understand what he means, and correct me if i'm wrong.
he wants to expand his mind, so that he isn't as restricted when playing by his mind. a lot of new drummers have the exact opposite issue, their minds can hear these sick beats, but they can't physically play them, imagine just the opposite, where physically (concerning chops, and limb independence, things of that nature) you could play damn near anything, and your only limit was your mind, why not expand your mind where the limit is nowhere in sight?

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
that seems very difficult because that seems like you would have to have so much muscle memory stored
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
headroom is liking running at 80%...
with 80% you still have 20% more that you are able to use, but you don't.
that's why people like Jay dickson practice all of that independence stuff.. and ostinatos and such. to increase their playing capability so the easier stuff like playing with a band is easier and more comfortable...

Yea id say if your gonna use it get it.
And yea you guys get the headroom thing.
Hence why i was asking about really quick doubles the other day, im never really gonna use them much but it would increase my headroom capacity.
