Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Yeah, it definitely makes it very difficult. I seemed to have picked it up pretty quickly though, but some stuff can be brainteasers. I've just been going through comping exercises in a few of my books and transferring them, then just playing them over jazz play-alongs. I want the hats to become very free so I can do it at ease. I'd like some mini hats on a remote hihat stand, and comp on them whilst keeping time as usual, it would sounds great I think.

Yeah, great book. For the feet I've just been doing comping out of that, and some out of my Jazz Standards book (I've just recently discovered how great this book is).

nice.
There's definately some cool stuff in that book, super advanced at times.

InSight. wrote:Groove or no groove, I've always enjoyed Thomas's playing. He really gets into some crazy stuff, I have Creative Coordination & AFT, I worked through it for awhile. Lost interest really, I mean, I don't mind learning doing a polyrhythm of 5's over doubles, or triplets, but where it would benefit my drumming I didn't quite see. Though from the time I did work on it, it greatly improved my coordination from where it was previous to working through it. But it does do your head in at times, ha! Right now I am looking back through it looking for some tasteful foot ostinatos to work on and do some grooves over. But I may look back into it, I'm doing some, for what is pretty difficult and involves some coordination and rewiring of the brain for me, comping on the hats and keeping time by feathering the kick.
Yea he says a few times throughout the dvds that groove and the back beat are the most important thing however i didn't buy the dvd to learn about groove haha Im trying to work on more complex polyrhythms and more advanced foot stuff, its really advanced stuff and its a struggle at the minute so its a slow process but ill get there.
Yea i really wish i didn't miss the Jay Dickson and Thomas Lang clinic a few months back.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
I saw a video of it online, it sounds pretty dope, and the price tag is under 300 i think, it's definitely a good deal.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread

Holy crap that's a good deal.
I was expecting this snare to be at least $300 or so.
That's just waayyyy too tempting to buy. haha.

How much did the stick bag cost ?
I'd never seen that before now, and I really dig it. That seems like a fantastic idea, and I love the flat base stand it's supported on. Really sweet.
And regarding the field trip to Memphis... I'm unsure.
Gonna have to check and see how I'm doing as far as money is concerned when that week rolls around, and I might be starting a new job at Best Buy soon, so I may not be able to make it. Hoping I can, but we'll see.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Im also interested in how mush that is.
I dont think I need it right now, but It would definately be handy down the road.
And it looks really nice, especially with the flat based stand.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
It is going for 99.99...a litte expensive, however I doubt that I will ever need another sitck bag again...and considering that have probably spent more than that on regular stick bags that wear out...also I was going to add a tray table to I figured 2 birds...
well since I live in Memphis, I will organize going if anyone is down to go...
and Tay, are you going to be working in the music dept?

Right on. Get a few pics of it if you can, bro. Curious to see some real pics of it.
I'm definitely gonna have to look around and consider picking one of those up. My current stick bag is the same cheap Zildjian that I bought for 15 bucks the same week I ordered my first kit... about 7 years ago. haha. It's pretty much worn out completely, and besides that it only holds like 6 pairs of sticks. I've always wanted to find an easier way to "mount" my stick bag, as opposed to hanging it from my floor tom, so this seems effective, and looks pretty awesome. That flat base stand with it is just too cool. haha.
I'll let you know as soon as I can find out for sure about the Memphis trip.
It's only about a 5 hour drive, and that's not too bad, but I'd have to be back home that night/very early morning next day. And I need to figure up how much gas money that would take and such. It's all up in the air right now.
And regarding Best Buy... alas, no it will not be in the music section, though that was my first choice. This is a smaller store, and they don't even have it here. So it will probably just be a standard sales job.
I actually applied for the "Musical Instruments Specialist" position originally, back even before the store opened a few months ago. I got a call back for an interview, and was super stoked about it. I showed up a few days later, expecting to be interviewed based on my musical experience and knowledge of gear and so forth, right ? Man was I in for a shock when they told me they weren't even going to have that department in the store. Oh well. I'm hoping they'll add it on eventually though, and when they do, I'm there.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
I'm really having a tough time with my next drum set selection...
I got such a good quote on the price of the Platinums (well, better than I expected)
And they sound and look amazing.
