Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Right now, I just realized the stupid stupid stupid guy didn't tell me that there are FOUR missing claws and t rods.
Goddamn it, I hate when sellers intentionally leave out information. I couldn't check out the drums, and he lives like 4 hours away, so I'm gonna have to buy some new ones.
Luckily, Vintage ludwig claws look very similar to generic marching bass drum claws.
And btw: I put on the reso, and the Fiberskyn looks mega sexy with the black panther+silver sparkle inlay hoops.

It a couple of months, I might have to get some new flat based stands though... heavy duty double braced hardware looks so out of place with a nice classy vintage kit.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
That sucks Ali, but a guess it could be worse for sure.
That kit is going to look so sick, can hardly wait to see it.
Flatbased stands would be so classy too.

Well, look on the bright side, at least it's only 4 missing. That should only be a few bucks to replace.
Anything else wrong with them that you've noticed so far ?
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
The hoops were pretty beat initially, but I used some acrylic black and grey paint, mixed em up, and repainted the hoops, and surprisingly, it looked great! I painted all the parts that were chipped and weren't black anymore, and the acrylic paint really matched with the original colour.
I can't go to the music store till tomorrow, so I can't get the claws yet, so it should be done soon.
I was more annoyed that the guy didn't tell me about that. I don't really mind replacing em.
The B&O Badge on the bass drum is broken, but that's not a BIG problem to me. He already told me about that anyway.
I FINALLY got the Super Sensitive snare's snares off, and cleaned up the shell. It's got some serious pitting, but it's all good. Looks pretty good. I can't wait to get me a Hazy 200 or something on the snare side.
The tension rods are currently being soaked, and when they're done, I'll tune up the toms.
This things looking pretty good.
Though, I'm pretty lazy to polish all the lugs to be honest, so I'm just gonna leave them be. They're not shiny like brand new, but they're not rusty either. They look fine.

Sounds like it's coming together nicely Ali.
Keep up the good work.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Finally bought my claws and my snare side head. Got an Ambassador Snare side.
Lemme tell you, I just tuned up my Super Sensitive snare, and it's really great. Especially since I have my 4-ply maple Dennis Chambers snare and now a chrome over ludalloy Super sensitive 14x5. They're like VERY different snares and contrast eachother well.
Kinda weird though. Out of the two snares I own, they BOTH have dual strainers

Thats good Ali, those supersensitive snares are really nice. Im sure it will contrast your DC snare well.
Whats left to do to the kit?

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
IT'S FINISHED!
I have it setup right now.
I don't have a throne right now though, so I'm using a regular chair, soooo... the drums are setup pretty low, because my regular chair has no height adjustment capabilities
But it's looking great. I really love it. The BLACK PANTHER looks amazing in person and imo is ALOT nicer of any other black finish I've seen.

hehe, I like teasing.
I can't wait to get some new hardware though. First I need a new throne, then a new snare stand, then some flat based stands and a new hihat stands. :/
I need alot of things.

Don't we all.
haha.
Yeah, everyone has an endless list of things to get.
My is mainly just:
-3 DW 6000 Straight Stands, a DW 6000 Snare Stand, DW 6000 Hat Stand
-Single Pedal: Dw9000 or Yamaha DirectDrive.
Then new shells. And a few more cymbals.

Yeah, though I'm pretty convinced that, at least for myself, it's much less of a "need" than I would like to think.
More like, "I'm addicted to new gear so I wanna buy more stuff", kind of thing.
Which is exactly why I currently own 4 kits, 7 snares, and a crapload of hardware and other accessories that I hardly ever use, but have no intention of stopping there, and still have a huge list of other stuff I want. haha.
It's ridiculous.
Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Yeah, my list....
In no order...
-More cymbals including: 20" K Custom Hybrid Ride, 19" K Custom Hybrid China, among many others
-More (and upgraded) hardware- I'd like to get nicer snare stand(s) I'll also need more cymbal stands whenever I get another cymbal, I'm soon to just have enough cymbal stands for the cymbals I currently use.
-New kit-- new or gently used really... I'd love either a Yamaha MCAN or a Masters, MCAN preferred, but once i get to be in the shells market, if i find a good enough deal on some masters, i'll snatch them.
I know there is way more than that, but that's good enough for now.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
2 months of school holidays begin today, meaning I'll have a lot of time to contribute to discussions. Also meaning I'll have a lot of time to practice, and practice with 3 other groups. I've already put today aside to perform a much needed task: clean my music room!
Unfortunately lately I've been really quite unmotivated to play, and in the past week I've probably only put in 2 hours of practice, down from my previous 15 hours a week. But hopefully with the spare time, I'll return soon, and hopefully with a bit more creativity after a rest. It's been driving me mental not playing, but driving me mental playing (plus I've been quite busy, not leaving a great deal of spare time to practice.)
Just a few days ago I put in my massive payment for the recording gear that you might remember me discussing about 5-10 pages back, and discussing on the PDF. PM's and emails have been flying around at all angles, and I've been spending a lot of my spare time reading up on places like tweakheadz. I'll soon order an interface as well. Most likely going to be the Tascam US 2000 USB 2.0 Audio Interface, for about $650. And the rest (mics, cables, stands etc) all totaled at $1,120. Big hit on my wallet, as nearly all of this will come out of my pocket, but the band and I are going to evenly spread a contribution for the interface, as we will all use it as a group. The first half (mics etc) was purchased from cymbalsonly.com (contradicing!), thank you Tony for all the marvelous help and prices, then second half (interface) will be bought elsewhere as Tony doesn't stock a great deal of interfaces and mixers). The band, when needed, will buy their own mics and cables, which all shouldn't cost a great deal.
And a bit about the drumming (as as I've read over the past few pages, I've realized this forum is at moment too gear orientated, and there's very little talk about the drumming itself.) I've been really craving some Rodney Holmes type patterns (if anybody has seen his MDF 2005 solo), it's jam packed with really tasty, latin(y) percussive patterns applied to drumset. I've found his main, and favored cowbell pattern that the audience went wild for transcribed on a website. But I can't get the feel until I purchase a cowbell. But with that aside, anybody know of any websites with some transcriptions (preferably not videos) or book with some tasty Rodney Holmes type grooves?

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Well I am not aware of any books or sites off the top of my head that have transcriptions for the type of Rodney Holmes style drumming your after, I am also interested in learning more of this style.
Whereabouts did you find the cowbell pattern transcribed.

Ash, I'm assuming this is the cowbell groove you're referring to, correct ?

Here you go:

I really want to work on it, and I got the first bar going awhile ago, but it's hard to feel and hear it without the cowbell!
Yeah, that's it Taylor.

Re: The Official JJ Johnson Thread
Woah, I just checked out a few of his videos.
That kid has got talent for sure.
He looks so happy when he plays too, the world could use a few more people like that.
