Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
Thanks a lot, guys. I want to get better pictures of it (with a real camera in natural light), so I think I'll have to put some time aside to dust an polish. I'm pretty excited haha.
Jeff: They're just Keller 8-ply maple shells. I kind of regret buying "custom" Kellers. The shells are fine, its just my parents and I were pretty ignorant of what exactly we were getting at the time. I basically paid way, way too much for a wrap and hardware installation. Still, they turn heads everytime I take them into a club and they sound great recorded, so I'm happy with the drums themselves.
Tim: The kick is 24x16, actually. That and the ride is what usually blows everyone away when they walk up to my set. Most everyone I know has a 22x18 or smaller and a 20" ride.

24x16, nice. Very old school. I bet it sounds great. Unlike all of this modern super deep crap.
Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
Specs:
HP Custom, black oyster pearl, 8-ply maple, 65 degree bearing edge in an attempt for that vintage sound
14x5.5 HP snare in white oyster
13x8 wing (HP owner/assembler confused me into agreeing to an 8" depth rather than a standard 9")
16x16 floor (not pictured)
18x16 floor
24x16 kick (I'm thinking about having it reduced to a 14". 16" is just too much drum for me )
14" Zildjian New Beats (my dad's old hats, about 23 years old, actually)
18" Zildjian Armand Medium Thin
16" Zildjian A Custom Projection
24" Paiste 2001

Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
Great specs. yeah I would get that kick cut down! 24x14 is such an awesome size. and I like 13x8 better than 13x9.

Oh yeah, they sound excellent, but I know I paid way too much for what I ended up getting. I have several friends (one posts on the PDF, marinesrx87) who have HPs and they feel the same way about their sets. We all got ours around the same age, 15/16 years old, and at the time we didn't understand that these weren't the equivalent of Masterworks. I really like having something other than a Peral, Tama or DW, though. It's a great conversation starter with other musicians.J. wrote:oh ok. so you're just not happy with the price you paid? The New Beats are awesome. They're probably the most consistent piece of the set. They sound great in every recording I have. Every other cymbal will sound like a trashcan lid in live recordings or demo work, but the New Beats are always perfect straight off the board.sjman409 wrote:your kit is gorgeous. and i dig the new beats, i have a pair just like them.

Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
22x18 is about the deepest I could go. It is what I've got now. For some reason when I build/buy a high end kit (like a starclassic... ) I'm probably gonna end up with a 22x17" just because...

why don't you try 20"? its a little more versatile. it can be tuned deep or punchy depending on what you want. And actually the 18" bass on the remo set that my school has is pretty beefy for that small of a kick.

I've thought about it. I'm definitely gonna have to try them before I'd get a new set. I really haven't played on too diverse of setups.
Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
whoa that is a sleek looking kit, i really like it man.
Re: My HP Customs - New Pics, 22 June, Page 3
I was just under some stage lights. I actually might have some pictures of the lights... the band before us was pretty boring, so I started trying to get cool pictures of the overheads... 'ang on.
Edit: Nope, no pictures. But y'all know what I'm talking about.
